Salade de Fruits, or French fruit salad, is a beloved light and refreshing dessert that embodies the simplicity and elegance of French cuisine. Often served as a palate cleanser or a sweet finish to a meal, especially during warmer months, it highlights the natural sweetness and vibrant colors of fresh, seasonal produce, typically brightened with a hint of citrus or a subtle syrup.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Fresh Strawberries(hulled and quartered)
  • 1 cup Fresh Blueberries
  • 2 medium Kiwi(peeled and sliced)
  • 1 large Orange(peeled, segmented, and cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 large Mango(peeled, pitted, and diced)
  • 1 cup Green Grapes(halved)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 0.25 cup Granulated Sugar(for simple syrup)
  • 0.25 cup Water(for simple syrup)
  • 0.25 cup Fresh Mint Leaves(finely chopped, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. 1

Prepare the simple syrup: In a small saucepan, combine granulated sugar and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

  2. 2

Wash all fruits thoroughly. Hull and quarter the strawberries. Peel and slice the kiwi. Peel the orange, segment it, and cut segments into smaller pieces. Peel, pit, and dice the mango. Halve the green grapes.

  3. 3

In a large mixing bowl, gently combine the prepared strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, orange segments, mango, and green grapes.

  4. 4

Pour the cooled simple syrup over the fruit mixture.

  5. 5

Add the fresh lemon juice to the bowl.

  6. 6

Gently toss the fruit to ensure it is evenly coated with the syrup and lemon juice.

  7. 7

Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, to allow the flavors to meld and the fruit to chill.

  8. 8

Just before serving, garnish with fresh chopped mint leaves. Serve chilled.

Chef's Tips

  • For the best flavor and texture, use ripe, seasonal fruits. Avoid overripe or underripe produce.
  • If you plan to serve the salad later, add delicate fruits like bananas or apples just before serving to prevent browning or mushiness.
  • For an adult version, a splash of orange liqueur (like Grand Marnier) or a dry white wine can be added to the syrup for an extra layer of complexity.
