A classic refreshing salad from Greece, known for its vibrant colors and bold flavors. It typically features ripe tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, red onion, Kalamata olives, and a generous slab of creamy feta cheese, all dressed simply with olive oil and oregano. Originating from rural Greece, Horiatiki Salata, meaning "village salad," was a simple, hearty meal for farmers. It represents the essence of Greek Mediterranean cuisine, emphasizing fresh, local ingredients and minimal processing, making it a staple across the country.

Ingredients

  • 3 count Large ripe tomatoes
  • 1 count Large English cucumber
  • 0.5 count Medium red onion
  • 0.5 cup Pitted Kalamata olives
  • 200 grams Block feta cheese (not crumbled)
  • 0.25 cup Extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Red wine vinegar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1

Wash and chop the tomatoes into large wedges or chunks. If using cherry tomatoes, halve them. Place them in a large salad bowl.

  2. 2

Peel the cucumber (optional) and slice it into thick half-moons or chunks. Add to the bowl with the tomatoes.

  3. 3

Thinly slice the red onion into rings or half-moons. For a milder flavor, soak the sliced onion in cold water for 10 minutes, then drain before adding to the salad.

  4. 4

Add the Kalamata olives to the bowl.

  5. 5

Place the block of feta cheese directly on top of the vegetables.

  6. 6

Drizzle generously with extra virgin olive oil. If using, add the red wine vinegar.

  7. 7

Sprinkle dried oregano, salt, and black pepper over the salad and feta.

  8. 8

Serve immediately without mixing. Encourage diners to mix at the table, allowing the feta and dressing to meld with the vegetables and release their juices.

Chef's Tips

  • Use the highest quality, ripe summer tomatoes and a good extra virgin olive oil for the best flavor.
  • Always use a block of authentic feta cheese, not pre-crumbled, for superior taste and texture.
  • Do not add lettuce or other leafy greens; a true Greek salad is traditionally lettuce-free.
  • For an extra layer of flavor, lightly crush the dried oregano between your palms before sprinkling.
